Ending off a week scattered with snow and sleet, our Smarties in London squad rugged up and set their sights towards the Slug- an antipodean bar in Fulham- for a night of beer, pizza, and Bogan Bingo.
For those who don’t know, a bogan is Australian slang for a ‘chav’ and bingo is, well, bingo; complete with a little wheel, prizes, and two energetic announcers.
This isn’t your typical run-of-the-mill bingo game. This is a performance that includes mullets and flannies, spontaneous sing-a-longs, and silly prizes.
Our Smarties were soon fully immersed in the erm, Australian culture. When number 45 on the 90 digit bingo slip was called out, we were ‘halfway there.. oooohhh living on a prayer!’ And, as any bingo connoisseur knows, 88 is commonly referred to as ‘two fat ladies’ so of course, we all obliged in a stirring rendition of ‘Fat Bottomed Girls’ by Queen.
London is a wonderful city for overseas teacher to come and live and work. There’s such a great antipodean community scattered around, and events like these help connect expats with other expats. We had a ball meeting our newly arrived overseas teachers and cannot wait for our next Smarties in London event to meet more!
If you’re an overseas teacher thinking of teaching in the UK, we would love to hear from you. Our international team aim to support those thinking of heading abroad to teach in London- it's a big move, but it doesn't have to be. Please contact us with your CV today.
